Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes received a major boost as the Super Eagles defeated Rwanda 2-0 on matchday five, thanks to a brilliant brace from Victor Osimhen.
The win in Kigali ended Nigeria’s winless run in the qualifiers and marked the country’s first away goals against Rwanda in nearly 20 years. Prior to the match, Nigeria was fifth in Group C, five points behind the automatic qualification spot, intensifying pressure to secure a victory.
All eyes were on newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, who took charge following the dismissal of Augustine Eguavoen earlier this year. Chelle’s tenure got off to a strong start as his tactical setup helped Nigeria dominate the encounter at Stade Amahoro.
Osimhen’s goals, one in each half, sealed the much-needed win and reignited the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
With the victory, the Super Eagles are now back in contention, and fans across the nation will be hoping Chelle can maintain the momentum through the remaining qualification fixtures.
Chelle named a strong starting XI, featuring many players with Premier League experience. Ola Aina lined up at left-back, Alex Iwobi partnered Wilfred Ndidi in midfield and Calvin Bassey continued his partnership with captain, and former Watford star William Troost-Ekong in central defence.
Though the opening goal of the game came via a combination of a player tipped to return to England this summer and a player heavily linked with a Premier League transfer.
