A Federal High Court in Abuja has awarded N15 million in general damages to Mr. Ime Unaowo Nta, a former officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
The ruling comes after Nta endured physical assaults, embarrassment, and humiliation from his superior officers nearly nine years ago. The court's decision marks a significant victory for Nta, who sought justice for the mistreatment he faced during his service.
This compensation serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability within the ranks of national institutions.
Justice Bello Kawu made the award while delivering judgment in a suit numbered CV/1092/2016, on 24 September 2024.
The matter was between Ime Unaowo Nta, the claimant, and two defendants – namely Mohammed Zaik and Tamunopirik Auguma Virginia Oyedeji
The court further awarded another N1 million against the plaintiffs as the cost of the suit as well as an additional N100,000 to the claimant as a cost for medication and hospital bills following the physical assault.
