The Federal Government has officially renamed the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The announcement was made by Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, on Monday after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The move recognizes Gowon's contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
Idris said the proposal would be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.
He said, “The third item is that the Federal Assisted Council also decided to rename the University of Abuja to honor elder statesman General Yakubu Gowon.
“The University of Abuja will not be known as Yakubu Gowon University. Of course, the processing will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislation in that direction.
