The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing misconduct, highhandedness, and poor leadership during his decade-long tenure.

Representing Agege Constituency, Obasa was removed on Monday following allegations of financial misappropriation, authoritarian leadership, and incitement among lawmakers.

The Assembly emphasized the need for accountability and better governance in its decisions.

The lawmakers replaced Obasa with Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa I, making her the first female Speaker in the history of the Assembly. The Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, was also removed and replaced with Abubakar Ottun as Acting Clerk.

During the impeachment proceedings, Femi Saheed, a lawmaker, moved a motion under the Matter of Urgent Public Importance. Saheed cited several grievances, including:

– Perpetual lateness to legislative sessions and meetings.
– Highhandedness and lack of regard for fellow lawmakers.
– Gross abuse of office and privileges.
– Intimidation and oppression of members by inciting divisions among them.
– Authoritarian and undemocratic leadership style.
