Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has endorsed the 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs announced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Edun emphasized the need for telecom companies to enhance their service quality to match the price adjustment, the first in over a decade.

The tariff hike, introduced on Monday, aims to revitalize the telecom sector but has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with debates surrounding its timing and potential impact on consumers.

Speaking on Thursday at the ongoing 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Edun described the hike as a necessary step to sustain the telecom industry amid rising inflation and operational costs.

“Inflation has surged, and this must be reflected in the business operations of telecom companies. While their prices are regulated to prevent arbitrary increases, it’s important to acknowledge the rising cost of living. The 50 percent tariff adjustment is just the beginning of a phased approach to necessary reforms,” Edun explained.
