Nigeria Mourns Former German President Horst Köhler, Hails His Legacy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to Germany following the death of former President Horst Köhler.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria described Köhler's passing as a significant loss to the global community.

The government praised his legacy of service, integrity, and dedication to the common good, noting that his contributions will continue to inspire future generations. Nigeria also expressed solidarity with the people of Germany during this time of mourning.



The statement recalled that the departed German leader, during his tenure as President from 2004 to 2010, and also in his previous role as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering global economic stability, sustainable development, and multilateralism.

It reads in parts; “The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses its sincere condolences to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany, and especially to family, friends, and political associates following the death of former President Horst Köhler.

“The demise of Horst Köhler is a great loss not only to Germany but to the global community, which benefited immensely from his leadership, vision, and dedication to international cooperation and development.
