Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has threatened to sue former military head of state, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) over his illegal detention during the June 12 struggle and the execution of his childhood friend, Mamman Vatsa.

According to DAILY NIGERIAN, Babangida, in his newly released memoir titled "A Journey of Service," admitted to approving the execution of Mamman Vatsa for an alleged coup attempt. He also confirmed that Moshood Abiola won the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Falana insists that IBB must be held accountable for human rights violations during his regime, signaling a potential legal battle over past military-era injustices.

But speaking during an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, Mr Falana said revelations made by the former military leader have brought the matter to life.

Mr Falana recalled how he was arrested alongside Gani Fawehinmi and Bensome Ransom Kuti for participating in the IBB-must-go protest after he annulled the election.

Mr. Falana added that the late Vatsa and others were sentenced to death over a “phantom coup”, adding that, “the case of Mamman Vatsa was a premeditated murder”.
