Emerging reports indicate that former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, are in advanced discussions to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) amid growing discontent within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to sources familiar with the development, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, former Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Adamu, and several aggrieved APC members, including ex-ministers from the Buhari administration, are also considering a move to the SDP.
The planned defections are believed to be driven by internal party divisions, political realignments, and dissatisfaction with the APC leadership.
While there has been no official confirmation, the move, if actualized, could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, positioning the SDP as a formidable opposition party.
This development comes amid talks of a coalition among opposition parties to present a common front capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 election.
According to a source, the coalition efforts from the opposition will involve Atiku Abubakar’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi’s faction of the Labour Party (LP), and Nasir Elrufai, who recently defected to the SDP.
