The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Canada have signed a codeshare agreement aimed at enhancing efficiency, connectivity, and collaboration in the aviation sector between both countries.
The announcement was made on Friday by Gbenga Saka, Special Adviser on Digital Media to Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.
Codesharing is a widely adopted practice in the airline industry, where two or more airlines agree to sell seats on each other's flights, thereby expanding route options for passengers and improving load factors for airlines.
The newly signed agreement will enable airlines operating from Nigeria and Canada to offer passengers seamless travel experiences, greater flight availability, and easier interline ticketing across both nations.
“This agreement marks a significant milestone in fostering international cooperation and positioning Nigeria’s aviation industry for global competitiveness,” Saka stated.
The partnership is expected to attract more investments in the aviation sector, increase passenger traffic, and strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Canada through improved air transport services.
Speaking during the signing of the agreement, Keyamo said the agreement would advance the relationship between both countries
“Today, we advance our relationship one step further as we sign a very important agreement,” the minister said.
“It is not a full Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), but one that has to do with codesharing and subsequently, we are going to designate airlines on both sides to move this forward.
