Nigeria is taking steps to rebuild diplomatic relations with the Republic of Niger after months of strained ties following the 2023 military coup in the neighboring country.

On Thursday, April 17, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, announced via his official X handle that he led a high-level delegation to Niamey, Niger’s capital, to re-establish bilateral cooperation.

Tuggar said the visit focused on restoring trust and promoting regional stability, with discussions centered on key areas such as security, energy, trade, and migration management. He also emphasized the importance of reviving the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC) and addressing environmental concerns like desertification.

The move signals Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful diplomacy, regional integration, and shared development goals as it works to strengthen cooperation across West Africa.
