Prominent human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called on the Nigeria Police Force to pay ₦100 million in compensation to 17-year-old Alabi Quadri, who was wrongfully detained for months at Kirikiri Correctional Facility over false armed robbery charges.
Quadri became a national symbol of courage after a viral video in 2023 showed him standing in front of Peter Obi’s presidential convoy. He was later arrested, allegedly framed by local miscreants and corrupt officers, and charged without evidence.
On Thursday, a Magistrate Court in Apapa, Lagos, presided by Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi, ordered his release, following legal advice from DPP Dr. Babajide Martins, who found no case to answer.
Effiong applauded the DPP’s stance and demanded the immediate removal and disciplinary action against the Amukoko DPO and Inspector Odigbe Samuel, accusing them of a “sinister and corrupt scheme” to frame the teenager.
This case highlights growing concerns over police abuse, wrongful detentions, and the need for deeper reforms within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
