The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the early completion of repair works on the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Originally slated for reopening on May 6, 2025, the runway will now resume operations on Monday, April 28, 2025.
Keyamo confirmed the accelerated timeline via a post on his official X platform on Sunday, April 27, commending the hard work and dedication that led to finishing ahead of schedule.
"Dear compatriots, we worked extra hard to meet the deadline we set on the repair of the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and finished way ahead of the scheduled date. It will now be open for use as from tomorrow (the 28th of April, 2025)," Keyamo wrote.
This update follows an earlier statement by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, who confirmed that the runway had passed inspection and was deemed fit for landings and takeoffs.
The airport had been temporarily closed on April 19 to address urgent runway maintenance needs after safety concerns were raised by airlines operating at the facility.
The early reopening is expected to restore seamless air connectivity to Enugu and surrounding regions, easing travel disruptions ahead of the peak travel season.
