The Chinese government has announced the establishment of a Chinese Centre at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State. This initiative aims to enhance cultural exchange and educational cooperation between China and Nigeria.
The announcement was made during a delegation visit led by Yan Yuqing, China’s Consul-General in Lagos. Represented by Prof. Liu Hongwu, Director of the Institute of African Studies at Zhejiang Normal University, the delegation highlighted that the centre will serve as a gateway for UNIPORT students to access Chinese language programs, academic resources, and training opportunities.
As part of the initiative, a “China Window” will also be launched—an engagement platform to improve Nigerian understanding of Chinese language, history, and culture.
The University of Port Harcourt’s Public Relations Officer, Sammy Kpenu, confirmed the development, stating that the collaboration aligns with China’s broader strategy to deepen ties with African institutions. Yuqing emphasized that the initiative is designed to yield mutual long-term benefits in education and diplomacy.
