The Federal Government has announced plans to revert the names of all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) to their original designation—Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs)—starting from September 2025.

The decision, revealed by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with principals of Federal Unity Colleges in Abuja, is part of a broader policy reform aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s technical and vocational education sector.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the change is more than symbolic. “It signals a real shift in educational priorities, preparing students for a changing workforce, reducing youth unemployment, creating jobs, and promoting a technology-driven society,” he said. The move is also intended to restore the practical, hands-on training model that proved effective over four decades ago, aligning with national goals of industrialization and youth empowerment.

The rebranding marks a strategic commitment to reposition technical education as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic and workforce development strategy.
