Timothy Omotoso, the Nigerian televangelist acquitted of rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking, has left South Africa amid public outrage and renewed legal scrutiny.

Omotoso, 66, who spent eight years in jail, was cleared last month of 32 charges, but his acquittal has drawn backlash across South Africa. Critics blame prosecutorial mishandling, a claim echoed by the presiding judge.

Just days after his release, state prosecutors announced plans to appeal, stating:
“There are reasonable prospects of a successful appeal despite the complexities of the legal process,” said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which also vowed to investigate the initial prosecution team.

Omotoso, founder of Jesus Dominion International (JDI) — with branches in Nigeria and Israel — was seen at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg on Sunday, reportedly en route to Nigeria.

His deportation followed a May 10 re-arrest on immigration charges, and authorities confirmed he did not require special clearance to exit the country.

The case continues to make headlines as South African legal bodies seek to restore public trust in the justice system.
